Hear what the church told our town

Under two minutes, straight from the Town's own meeting recording. When a council member asked for a compromise on the canopy height, here's how it went.

“Why are we having it so high to block all the views for everybody in the area?”

Council Member Pace

“Yeah, I know you lowered to 14, but why isn't it 9 feet like many of them around town?”

Council Member Pace

“So if it gets declined, then I'm going to have more involvement.”

What is being proposed?

Elevated solar canopies beside homes, blocking your views and setting a bad precedent

The Franciscan Renewal Center is seeking a Major Special Use Permit amendment (SUP-26-02) for multiple elevated solar parking canopies beside residential neighborhoods. These are the project's own renderings.

Blocks your viewsCanopies up to 15 feet high, some about 212 feet long, rising into the mountain views neighbors see every day.

Why residents are concerned

This is about more than one parking lot

Mountain views lost

Canopies up to 15 feet high, with some arrays stretching around 212 feet, sit directly in the sightlines that make Paradise Valley what it is.

Neighborhood character

More than 12,000 square feet of elevated steel and panels beside homes, in the middle of a residential town.

Construction disruption

A large-scale build next to residential streets means months of noise, traffic and equipment for the neighbors closest to it.

Lower options exist

On the record, a council member asked why the canopies couldn't be 9 feet "like many of them around town." The proposal still calls for canopies far taller than that.

It opens the door

If this is approved, it sets the standard for the next large-scale project. Today it's solar canopies beside homes; tomorrow it's the next proposal that points to this one and says, “You already allowed it.” The views we don't protect now are harder to protect later.
